A sudden fall, twisted ankle, sports injury, or unexpected accident can leave you confused about what to do next. π
The first few minutes matter! Knowing the right first-aid steps can help protect the injured area and prevent further damage.
𦴠5 First-Aid Steps After an Injury
π 1. Stop the Activity
Avoid putting unnecessary weight or pressure on the injured area.
π§ 2. Apply Ice
Use an ice pack wrapped in a towel for 15–20 minutes. Never apply ice directly to the skin.
π©Ή 3. Use Gentle Compression
An elastic bandage may help control swelling. Keep it comfortable, not tight. Avoid compression over an open wound or suspected deformity.
β¬οΈ 4. Elevate the Injured Limb
Raise the injured arm or leg, if comfortable, to help reduce swelling.
𦴠5. Protect and Immobilise
If a fracture is suspected, avoid unnecessary movement. Support the injured area in the position found. Never try to straighten it yourself.

Visible deformity or suspected open fracture: Bone visible through a wound or severe limb deformity.
Uncontrolled bleeding: Apply firm pressure around the wound with a clean cloth, without pressing on protruding bone.
Circulation problems: The injured limb becomes cold, pale, blue, or numb.
Suspected spine or neck injury: Severe neck or back pain, weakness, or loss of sensation after trauma. Avoid moving the person unless there is immediate danger.
Severe trauma: Loss of consciousness, breathing difficulty, or major accident injuries.
π Call 112 in India for emergency assistance or ambulance support. Do not attempt to drive a severely injured person yourself.
β οΈ When Should You See an Orthopaedic Doctor?
Seek prompt medical assessment for persistent pain, significant swelling, difficulty walking, restricted movement, or suspected fracture—even if there is no visible deformity.
