An ankle sprain can happen in a moment—a misstep, a sudden twist, or an awkward landing can leave you with pain, swelling and difficulty walking. While many ankle sprains recover well, the right care in the early days can make a meaningful difference.
Give Your Ankle a proper Time to Settle.
In the first few days, protect the injured ankle and avoid activities that increases pain. Rest does not necessarily mean complete inactivity, but it is important to reduce unnecessary weight-bearing and avoid running, jumping or sports until your ankle is ready.

Cold therapy can help reduce pain and swelling. Apply a cold pack wrapped in a cloth for short periods and avoid direct contact with the skin. Keeping the ankle elevated above heart level, especially when resting, may also help control swelling. A compression bandage or ankle support may provide comfort and stability. It should be snug but not so tight that it causes numbness, tingling or changes in skin colour. As pain and swelling begin to improve, gentle movement and gradual rehabilitation become important. Simple range-of-motion exercises followed by strengthening and balance exercises can help restore stability and reduce the risk of another sprain.

When Should You See an Orthopaedic Specialist? Not every ankle injury is a simple sprain. Severe pain, significant swelling, inability to bear weight, marked tenderness over the bones, deformity, numbness, or symptoms that are not improving deserve professional evaluation.

In some cases, an X-ray or other assessment may be needed to rule out a fracture or a more significant ligament injury. Most importantly, don't rush back to sports simply because the pain has reduced. Your ankle should regain adequate strength, movement and stability before you return to demanding activities. With timely care and proper rehabilitation, you can give your ankle the best opportunity to heal well—and confidently get back on your feet.
