Not every case of knee pain requires an MRI. While MRI is an advanced imaging test that provides detailed images of the knee’s ligaments, menisci, cartilage and other soft tissues, it is usually recommended when the clinical evaluation suggests that this additional information is necessary. Many common causes of knee pain can initially be assessed through a detailed medical history and physical examination, and an X-ray may be advised when bone or arthritis-related changes need to be evaluated.

An MRI of the knee may be considered when there is a significant sports injury, suspected ligament or meniscus damage, persistent pain despite appropriate treatment, recurrent swelling, locking or instability, or when the cause of symptoms remains unclear after initial assessment.

The right investigation depends on your symptoms, age, injury history, physical examination and suspected condition. Getting an MRI without a clear clinical reason may not always provide useful information and can sometimes identify findings that are unrelated to the source of pain.
