Brushing your teeth twice a day is an important part of maintaining good oral hygiene, but sometimes bad breath can continue despite regular brushing. Persistent mouth odour, also known as halitosis, can have several possible causes and should not always be dismissed as a simple hygiene issue.

One common cause is the buildup of bacteria on the tongue, particularly toward the back of the tongue. Food particles can also remain trapped between teeth when flossing is neglected. Gum disease, tooth decay, cavities and plaque buildup are other common dental causes of persistent bad breath.

Dry mouth can also contribute. Saliva naturally helps clean the mouth and control bacteria, so reduced saliva production can allow odour-producing bacteria to increase. Dehydration, certain medications, smoking and tobacco use may contribute to dry mouth and unpleasant breath. Strong-smelling foods such as garlic and onions can temporarily affect breath as well.

Maintaining a consistent oral-care routine can help. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean your tongue, floss or use an appropriate interdental cleaner, drink enough water and keep your dental appointments regular. Avoiding tobacco and limiting frequent sugary foods can also support healthier teeth and gums.

If bad breath persists despite good oral hygiene, consider visiting a dentist rather than simply using mouth fresheners to mask the odour. A dental examination can help identify problems such as gum disease, cavities or other oral conditions and determine appropriate treatment.
