Does Every Knee Pain Need an MRI?

Not necessarily. MRI is a valuable tool for examining the soft tissues of the knee, but not every episode of knee pain requires an MRI scan.

Many common causes of knee pain—such as mild sprains, muscle-related pain, early arthritis or overuse—can often be assessed initially through a detailed medical history and physical examination.

Depending on the situation, an X-ray may also be useful, particularly when a bone or arthritis-related problem is suspected.

An MRI may be recommended when more detailed information is needed, such as when there is suspicion of a ligament or meniscus injury, persistent symptoms despite appropriate treatment, unexplained swelling, locking of the knee, or a significant sports injury.

The decision should depend on your symptoms, examination findings, injury history and clinical requirements, rather than simply having knee pain.

At Shanthi Orthopedic and Dental Clinic, Andheri West, Mumbai, a proper clinical assessment by Dr. Ankit Mittal (Orthopaedic surgeon)a Sports injury specialist can help determine whether imaging such as an X-ray or MRI is appropriate for your knee problem.

Remember: An MRI is a diagnostic tool—not automatically the first step for every knee pain.
